Boosting Diamond Open Access

DFG invites proposals for the establishment of a Service Centre to further develop and con-solidate the Diamond Open Access landscape in Germany

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is stepping up its long-standing activities in support of open access publishing which is free of charge to authors (“Diamond Open Access”). In doing so, it is picking up on current developments in European and international research policy. With its non-profit-oriented approach, the Diamond model offers considerable potential for establishing a publication system that is oriented towards the needs of science and the humanities.

The call for proposals seeks to boost the performance capacity of Diamond Open Access infrastructures operating in Germany. Specifically, the DFG is taking this step with the objective of establishing a Service Centre which can benefit the entire Diamond Open Access publishing landscape in Germany. The tasks of this Service Centre will include the provision, clustering and arrangement of basic services and also developing advisory services. Other objectives include the subject-specific and international networking and coordination of decentralised services, and the promotion of innovation.

Under this call for proposals, only a single project to set up a Service Centre can be awarded funding. The DFG Head Office will seek to coordinate those parties interested in submitting a proposal. If competing proposals are submitted, a maximum of one proposal will be selected for funding as a result of the review process.

The DFG Head Office is organising a general information event on 7 February 2024 for institutions that are essentially interested in submitting a proposal. Interested parties are requested to submit a letter of intent by 15 March 2024. A meeting of all interested parties is planned for mid/end of April 2024 for the purpose of coordinating a potential joint project. The funding proposal must be submitted via the DFG’s elan portal by 1 August 2024. Details can be found in the full text of this call for proposals (see the link supplied below under “Further Information”).
