Stakeholders of Japanese and German academic institutions came together to discuss the current situation and critical issues of gender equality in academic positions at the roundtable discussion “Promoting Gender Equality in Academic Appointments” held at Dokkyo University on 22 November.

The ratio of female to male holders of full professorships has gradually improved in both Germany and Japan. The speakers presented specific examples of measures taken at their institutions to promote gender equality. However, the panel also agreed that the situation varies between different research fields and that further promotion of diversity is necessary.

The event was organised by Dokkyo University, the German Rector’s Conference (HRK) and the German Centre for Research and Innovation Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo) in cooperation with the DFG and the German Academic Exchange Service Tokyo (DAAD Regional Office Tokyo). Further information on the roundtable participants is available on the event website.
