On 3 April, DFG President Professor Dr. Katja Becker and H.E. Mitsuko Shino, Ambassador of Japan, met for talks at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin. The aim of the meeting was to get to know each other and exchange views on bilateral relations.

Both sides emphasized the central importance of cooperation, particularly in times of geopolitical crises and instability. Free research that enables the exchange of researchers across borders continues to be indispensable for the social development and prosperity of both countries. At the same time, potential risks are to be considered and the aspect of responsibility must be taken into account.

For several years, the DFG has maintained close cooperation with Japanese partner organisations and regularly issues joint calls for proposals for German-Japanese projects. The 15th anniversary of the DFG Office Japan in Tokyo was celebrated in October 2024.(interner Link)
