Discussions with researchers have shown that sex, gender and diversity play a minor role in research projects from the area of natural sciences according to the DFG’s subject area structure, or have scarcely been studied to date.
Chemistry, physics, mathematics and geosciences are considered natural sciences according to the DFG’s subject classification syste.
Some exemplary projects are introduced below, in which aspects related to diversity are relevant in various ways and across different levels.
Gender, origin etc.: Participatory mapping is now an integral part of participation processes. However, the promised "participation" runs the risk of being instrumentalised and becoming a mere branding tool. This is where this research project comes in, by taking up the criticism of the concept of participation and the common methods of participatory mapping and submitting them to a systematic analysis. The aim is to develop mapping methods and design tools that meet the requirements of a decolonial-critical collective cartography – an engaged cartography.

Sex and gender roles, diversity dimensions of the researchers: To what extent and under which conditions are trading with e-waste, e-waste processing and the precarious circumstances of small e-waste enterprises in the Global South influenced by information and communication technology? On the one hand, different gender-related roles in business life and different digital practices employed by men and women are considered in the study. On the other hand, easy and trusting access to female interviewees in particular is ensured through involvement of a female researcher.
