Joint Committee on the Handling of Security-Relevant Research
In the recommendations published by DFG and Leopoldina in June 2014 under the title Scientific Freedom and Scientific Responsibility – Recommendations for Handling Security-Relevant Researc(Download), the research organisations offered to establish a joint advisory body to support the effective and sustainable implementation of these recommendations. The Joint Committee on the Handling of Security-Relevant Research held its inaugural meeting on 13 February 2015.
The Joint Committee monitors the implementation of the recommendations at research institutions and supports the latter in appropriately applying the guidance, such as by providing sample texts. This applies in particular to the establishment of committees for ethics in security-relevant research (KEF) as envisaged in the recommendations.
In addition, the Joint Committee publishes activity reports on a regular basis, observes developments in the field of security-relevant research in Germany to identify any possible need for action, and advises the DFG and Leopoldina on these issues.
