Anniversary: Celebrating 95 Years of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering
(23.11.16) In early November, Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) organised a ceremony to celebrate its 95th anniversary. A number of Russian and international partner universities and delegates from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Russian government were in attendance.

As one of the oldest and most renowned technical institutions of higher education in Russia, MGSU is also looking back on a successful tradition of international collaboration. Since its foundation, 3,000 students have studied at the university and 1,500 specialists from more than 100 countries have worked there. Showcase projects include the university’s involvement in constructing the Aswan Dam in Egypt, huge hydroelectric power plants in South East Asia (Hòa Bình, Vietnam), Siberia (Bratsk) and in the Caucasus Mountains (Enguri Dam wall) as well as in building the infrastructure for the 2014 Winter Olympics and the stadiums for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The international delegates at MGSU
As one of the national research universities, this traditional university of civil engineering is part of the elite circle of leading universities in Russia. Rector of MGSU Andrey Volkov is also the President of the Association of Educational Civil Engineering Institutions of Construction. More than 18,000 students are currently registered at MGSU’s seven institutes. There are cooperation agreements in place with 70 universities from 30 countries. MGSU has excellent contacts in Germany, especially the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Berlin. This was confirmed at the ceremony through the participation of Prof. Dr. Klaus Semlinger, President of HTW Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Heiß, Vice President of TU Berlin.
MGSU and the Bauhaus University Weimar used the anniversary celebrations as an opportunity to intensify their 50-year partnership. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl Beucke, Rector of the University of Weimar, and A.A. Volkov, Rector of MGSU, agreed to extend their strategic partnership to 2017/2018.
As a result of this long-term partnership, Weimar was heavily involved in the sixth German-Russian Week of the Young Researcher, which was hosted by the DFG and DAAD at MGSU under the auspices of the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in September 2016. The theme of this week for 70 early career researchers was “Urban Studies: the City of the Future”.
