On 25 and 26 March 2025, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) will be hosting the FAPESP Week Germany in Berlin. The FAPESP Week is an established format which aims to open up new opportunities for international research cooperation between researchers from the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and the target region.
The FAPESP Week Germany will take place at Freie Universität Berlin. The two-day symposium will bring together leading researchers from São Paulo and numerous German research institutions in a variety of scientific formats on topics that are relevant to both regions and in which research cooperation is to be further advanced. The DFGis the official main partner for the organisation of the FAPESP Week Germany. Many other institutions from Germany are also participating in the event's organisation.
The symposium offers a diverse programme ranging from keynotes and scientific sessions to panel discussions. It also aims to provide impulses for new cooperation. Interested researchers can also find out about the opportunities for research collaboration between the State of São Paulo and Germany.
The following topics will be covered on both days:

FAPESP is one of the major research funding organisations in Latin America. According to the constitution of the State of São Paulo, it is entitled to 1% of the state’s taxes, which ensures very stable funding. Its mission is to foster scientific research in all fields of knowledge by awarding scholarships, fellowships and grants to investigators linked with higher education and research institutions based in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
The stability of funding and the autonomy of FAPESP are reflected in the strength of São Paulo as a science location: With a population of around 45 million, the State of São Paulo is one of the strongest economic and scientific locations in Brazil and even Latin America; while 16% of the Brazilian population and 30% of the researchers holding a PhD are in São Paulo, the state is responsible for 45% of the Brazilian scientific articles published in international journals.
FAPESP and the DFG have a similar funding philosophy and funding programmes. As with the DFG, almost all FAPESP programmes are continuous and range from grants and individual projects to coordinated programmes such as research units and collaborative research centres. In addition to curiosity-driven research, FAPESP also funds application-oriented research. Both organisations maintain an active and long-lasting partnership and offer the opportunity to submit joint German-Brazilian proposals in all subject areas at any time, both within the framework of individual funding and within the framework of coordinated funding programmes.
