How the DFG makes funding decisions
The only criterion that counts towards DFG funding decisions is that of scientific quality. The decision-making proces(interner Link) comprises a number of stages. Reviews are the starting point for evaluation in all procedures and are a key step towards funding approval.
The decision-making process in individual grant programme(interner Link) follows three stages. The responsible staff member at the DFG Head Office selects competent reviewers who are suitably qualified to review the proposal. The first stage is for these reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the proposal. In the review board(interner Link), experts then evaluate the proposals within the broader context of their disciplines, thereby providing the basis for the funding decision. The final decision is made by the Joint Committee, which includes both researchers and policymakers, though researchers are always in the majority.
Whether or not a project is approved for funding depends on its ability to compete successfully with other research projects. Peer review is a key step in this process and is only possible thanks to the many researchers who voluntarily contribute their expertise. How this commitment is distributed statistically is shown in a statistical report in the section “Facts and Figures” (in German)(interner Link)
Quality assurance
The DFG pursues quality assurance in its procedures in relation to both the quality of content and formal accuracy. This formal quality assurance is the responsibility of Quality and Programme Management, a unit that is independent of the departments that process the proposals.
For more details on this, see Review criteria and quality assuranc(interner Link).
After the review
As a reviewer, you can find out about the funding decision on the proposal you reviewed by consulting your elan account. Here, you will have access to the anonymised reviews and notes from the discussions held by the statutory bodies.
Applicants likewise receive anonymised versions of the reviews and comments from the DFG Head Office after the decision has been made.
