Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg confirmed by General Assembly in Saarbrücken / Now 99 member organisations in total
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has two new member organisations: the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg were admitted to the largest research funding organisation and central self-governing organisation of science and the humanities in Germany by the General Assembly at the DFG annual meeting in Saarbrücken on 28 June 2023. With the addition of these two new member organisations, the DFG now has a total of 99 member organisations.
The application of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt was evaluated by the DFG’s Ad hoc Review Committee on Membership Applications: the latter arrived at a positive assessment of the documents submitted and an on-site visit to Eichstätt. The DFG Senate subsequently voted in favour of admitting the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt to the General Assembly. According to the statutes, universities can become member organisations if they are research institutions of general importance. Particular attention is paid to whether independent research forms part of an institution’s fundamental mission, and what the proportion of such research is in relation to the institution’s other activities.
The application of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg was also reviewed by the Ad hoc Review Committee and received a positive vote by the Senate, which likewise recommended its admission to the General Assembly. Academies can be admitted to the DFG if they are member organisations of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities.
The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg are the first new member organisations to join the DFG since the University of Erfurt was admitted in 2019. The DFG’s member organisations include universities, non-university research institutions, academies of sciences and humanities and also scientific associations. Applications for DFG funding are independent of membership: in terms of funding opportunities for organisations, all German higher education institutions are eligible to apply, while funding opportunities for individuals are available to all researchers in Germany or at a German research institution abroad who hold a doctorate, even if their respective institution does not belong to the group of member organisations.
