The DFG offers specific funding opportunities for cooperation with individual countries and regions. These are usually based on a cooperation agreement between the DFG and a foreign partner organisation. The Africa/Middle East regional area includes all African countries, the Arabian Peninsula, Israel and its neighbouring countries. In Iran, the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO the Iranian National Science Foundation (INSF and the National Institute for Medical Research Development (NIMAD are the DFG partner organisations.

The DFG partner organisations in Ukraine are the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU and the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU.
A memorandum of understanding with NASU has been in place since 1995, and this was renewed in 2017. A letter of intent with NRFU has been in place since 2020: this provides the basis for the work that is being done on an initial joint call for project funding.

- The DFG is expanding its existing funding measures for refugee researcher by making it easier to work on DFG research projects and apply for funding under the Walter Benjamin Programme.
- In addition, the DFG is taking over the funding of the Ukrainian share of bilateral research projects in connection with research grants for individual projects under the programme Cooperation with Developing Countrie.
From September 2022: In this connection, it is now also possible to request funding via the applicants in Germany to cover the living expenses of Ukrainian partners up to a maximum amount of €1,000 per month per project leader; if approved, this funding can be transferred. Here, the proposal submission must include confirmation from the Ukrainian university that only a limited salary can be paid in the case in question or none at all. In the case of new research projects, the total amount of funding requested for partners in Ukraine (to cover project implementation and living expenses) should be entered in the elan portal under “Other” in the section “Direct project costs”. A detailed breakdown of these requested funds is only required in the “Description of the Project – Project Proposal”. (Information for Researchers No. 6).
In addition, there is the option of raising funds for a Ukrainian project leader by submitting a supplemental proposal in connection with existing German-Ukrainian or purely German projects. If researchers from Ukraine are to be newly included in projects in this way, an explanation must be provided of the work to be added to the current projects. The option to apply is subject to a time limit until further notice and applies to all proposals received by the DFG up to and including 31 August 2026. Projects with a small financial volume are also welcome in order to start collaborations and prepare more extensive joint projects. When initiating joint projects, funds can be applied for using the funding instrument “Initiation of International Collaboration”. - The DAAD uses its website National Academic Contact Point Ukrain to collate extensive information and various offers of assistance by the German research community to support Ukrainian students and researchers.

The DFG partner organisations in Ukraine are the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU and the National Research Foundation of Ukraine (NRFU.
A memorandum of understanding with NASU has been in place since 1995, and this was renewed in 2017. A letter of intent with NRFU has been in place since 2020: this provides the basis for the work that is being done on an initial joint call for project funding.
The following support and information offerings for Ukrainian researchers are currently being highlighted:
- The DFG is expanding its existing funding measures for refugee researcher by making it easier to work on DFG research projects and apply for funding under the Walter Benjamin Programme.
- In addition, the DFG is taking over the funding of the Ukrainian share of bilateral research projects in connection with research grants for individual projects under the programme Cooperation with Developing Countrie.
From September 2022: In this connection, it is now also possible to request funding via the applicants in Germany to cover the living expenses of Ukrainian partners up to a maximum amount of €1,000 per month per project leader; if approved, this funding can be transferred. Here, the proposal submission must include confirmation from the Ukrainian university that only a limited salary can be paid in the case in question or none at all. In the case of new research projects, the total amount of funding requested for partners in Ukraine (to cover project implementation and living expenses) should be entered in the elan portal under “Other” in the section “Direct project costs”. A detailed breakdown of these requested funds is only required in the “Description of the Project – Project Proposal”. (Information for Researchers No. 6).
In addition, there is the option of raising funds for a Ukrainian project leader by submitting a supplemental proposal in connection with existing German-Ukrainian or purely German projects. If researchers from Ukraine are to be newly included in projects in this way, an explanation must be provided of the work to be added to the current projects. The option to apply is subject to a time limit until further notice and applies to all proposals received by the DFG up to and including 31 August 2026. Projects with a small financial volume are also welcome in order to start collaborations and prepare more extensive joint projects. When initiating joint projects, funds can be applied for using the funding instrument “Initiation of International Collaboration”. - The DAAD uses its website National Academic Contact Point Ukrain to collate extensive information and various offers of assistance by the German research community to support Ukrainian students and researchers.
